When Is a Certified Driving Licence Translation Required?

• NDLS driving licence exchange — Non-EU/EEA drivers wishing to exchange their foreign driving licence at the NDLS must provide a certified English translation if the licence is not in English.
• Insurance — no-claims bonus — Irish insurers require certified translations of foreign driving licences and letters of driving experience in order to recognise your no-claims bonus from abroad.
• Employment — transport and logistics — Haulage companies, bus operators and logistics employers require certified translations of foreign LGV/HGV/PSV licences during recruitment.
• ISD and visa applications — Driving licences are sometimes required as supplementary identity documents in ISD applications and may need certified translation.
• Court proceedings — Foreign driving licences submitted as evidence in Irish courts must be accompanied by a certified translation.
