The Official Status of Irish and When Translation Is Required

Irish (Gaeilge) is the first official language of the State under Article 8 of Bunreacht na hÉireann, and the working language of many public bodies under the Official Languages Act 2003. The dominant direction is English into Irish (Gaeilge). Fadas, Names, Séimhiú and Urú: What Careful Irish Translation Handles

Irish orthography carries diacritics (fadas: á, é, í, ó, ú) and grammatical mutations (séimhiú, marked by an h, and urú, marked by a prefixed consonant) that change meaning if dropped. Personal names carry patronymic and matronymic forms (Ó, Ní, Nic, Mac, Uí, Bean Uí) and are inflected by grammatical case. Placenames in Irish are official under the Placenames (Ceantair Ghaeltachta) Order and are used verbatim in State forms.
